The Sound of Music

At Adriana's recital the other day, she played a medley of songs from the Sound of Music. You'll hear, The Sound of Music, My Favorite Things, & So Long Farewell... She was given the final medley on the Friday before her recital on Sunday, I think she did brilliantly... (but then I'm rather biased!)
After seeing an amazing production of Annie at the Harwich Junior Theatre (don't miss it, there are still more shows) she's back to wanting to play 'Maybe', which I'm good with... I hope she always enjoys the musicals!
Enjoy!

a full moon

The sky is beautiful tonight, even with a full moon, which addds to it's beauty of course! Just makes it a bit harder to see everything else... My photo attachment arrived, along with some high powered new lenses, so I may not spend a night inside all winter!!! or ever again...

I could see Jupiter so clearly, and 3 of it's 4 moons, one is coming around the corner nearly as I write this, but it's time for dinner, so I'll have to miss it's trip!!! Maybe next time...

My first photo - the moon is cooler in it's phases than when it's full, you can see all of the craters and details better, but still is pretty amazing... *deep sigh* Love my telescope!!!

Happy Thanksgiving

I want to wish you all a very Happy Thanksgiving. I love this time of year, you get to enjoy just being with your families without any of the craziness. We're going to my sister's, I'm so looking forward to being together for a few days... As a child, we always went to friend's houses for the holiday as we didn't celebrate Thanksgiving (us all being from England), which was fun. I always went to my best friend, Judy's, house and remember her uncle snoring on the couch after the meal every year! This is better, my daughter gets to be with her cousins, we've got baby Dade for his second Thanksgiving, and I get to be with my mum & my sister & everyone, it's much more special... just less snoring (well maybe!!)

So enjoy.

The photos are of one of my favorite families to photograph, I've been photographing Emily since she was a baby, her brother, John, too, so it's such fun to watch them growing up... what a cool job I've got! Cold Storage beach is a fantastic beach in Dennis, and that night, although a little cool & windy, had spectacular light, a perfect night for a family beach portrait...

the moon

so I've been sick for the better part of a month, and I'm starting to get downright grumpy, but Friday, oh it was a good day... I felt miserable, but... Melaine, a dear friend, who is so funny & sweet & kind, came in right at the end of the day when I was leaving to go home to bed, and gave me a bag for my b-day... A Johnny Depp Rolling Stone cover shot - oh he is so beautiful. She said it was on the clearance rack, and she said, 'oh no Johnny, this is not where you belong, let me bring you home' (even my husband laughed at that one!)...

So I stumble into the house and go right to bed (after showing off my fab new bag of course...) I re-enter reality an hour or so later, and find that my birthday present from my hubby has also arrived, seems a week after your b-day is a good day for presents!! I got the most amazing, fantastic, really, really, crazy cool telescope!!! It has this way cool auto alignment thing, and even will tell you the viewing highlights for the night, every night of the year!!! Are you kidding? So last night it was crystal clear, and we looked at all of these stars & constellations, it was amazing. Ray & Adriana both saw a few Leonids, I only saw the flashes that lit the sky... (but of course, I had been out at 3:30am on Tuesday morning and watched them for more than an hour, so I can't complain, I did catch the highlights!!) Spent ages examing the sky... Ray was bummed as the moon set right as the sky was dark enough to view last night... so tonight we went & looked at the moon - wait until I get the photo attachment - I will probably never post another photo of a shoot again!!! You could see all of the craters on the moon, it has been so banged up, it's amazing. It was so bright it was almost glowing... The clouds kept obscuring our view, and then it would clear and I can't even tell you how fantastic it was, absolutely brilliant!!!! I may just have to give up my day job so I can stay up all night and stargaze....

and once again...

I'm reminded I'm not Martha... *deep sigh* In the new issue of Martha Stewart Living she has needle felted animals, well I love needle felting. My sweet sister, Marla, and I took a class and learned to felt sheep. Kind of funny making sheep from sheep... came home made a penguin, kinda sweet... started to make a goat, but his legs need to be a giraffe, so I've got some bits, a goat head, giraffe legs, and there they sat waiting for winter for me to take them out to play...

but then along came bronchitis, and Martha's mag, and I just assumed my polar bear would be way cuter than her, admittedly wicked cute, polar bear. She even cheated, pipe cleaners, what? Well, guess maybe I should have used the pipe cleaners!

Took my polar bear a long time to stop being a rat, think he's still got a little rat relative in his past, and one paw's slightly red from a really good stab to the finger... but I'm going with he's kinda cute. That, and the fact, it's true I ain't no Martha... oh well... at least I've never been to jail...

Cranberry season

so as I'm sure you can tell, my days are not long enough to have enough time to fit everything in... which makes my blog super boring, sorry!!

Well, in the midst of all of the insanity which is a photo studio in the fall, I took a few hours off last week to go with Adriana's class on a field trip to a cranberry bog. What fun!

They had flooded the bogs and were using some funky machines to beat the cranberries off the vines, the kids loved it. As did the adults! We're so lucky to have such a cool place to visit right around the corner (well, every corner really, there are loads of bogs round these parts).

I never walk Lucy on the bogs while they're harvesting, can never be sure she'll use her good dog manners! So it was fun to see it all in action.

I've got so many portraits to share, like the 4 generation family portrait I did on the beach on Sunday, or maybe my last senior of the season (phew!!) in a couple of days we'll see what happens...

First Things First

The press release for the upcoming Arts Foundation exhibit, not to be missed! Mark your calendars now - Sarah

Arts Foundation of Cape Cod presents major art exhibit
FIRST THINGS FIRST
An Interactive Art Exhibit of over 50 Established Cape Cod Artists

October 19, Centerville, MA - The Arts Foundation of Cape Cod will present a free, major regional art exhibit, FIRST THINGS FIRST, at the Cotuit Center for the Arts from January 9 to February 6, 2010. This free exhibit is the fourth annual regional exhibit presented by the Arts Foundation of Cape Cod, and will feature over 50 established Cape Cod artists.

Keeping younger patrons in mind, art work will be displayed at a height of 4 feet throughout the exhibit -- right at children’s eye level. In addition, a mini-art library will be made available to visitors, and a series of child-friendly events will be scheduled over the course of the month. School groups will be welcomed to the exhibit for free for the duration of the show, and will be given docent-led tours and art instruction customized to the age level of the children.

FIRST THINGS FIRST is presented thanks to the generous sponsorship of the Eastern Bank Charitable Foundation, and support from the Donald C. McGraw Foundation and Cape Cod Melody Tent. “We are honored to join with the Arts Foundation of Cape Cod to present this exceptional and engaging exhibit for the enjoyment of Cape students and families,” said Rana Murphy, Vice President of Eastern Bank. “The arts are an integral part of the education process and an essential element of every child’s complete education.”

The exhibit is free and open to the public. Gallery hours have been extended to accommodate the high demand anticipated for the show, based on advance bookings for school visits and the popularity of previously presented exhibits, Self Portrait Cape Cod, When We Were Younger and ROYGBIV.

For more information about the exhibit, the artists being featured, and opportunities for school groups to visit the exhibit at the Cotuit Center for the Arts, please call the Arts Foundation of Cape Cod at 508-362-0066.

Max & Killian

I love photographing senior portraits on the beach, it's a great job I've got... but sometimes... it's even better than normal...

Max brought Killian to Sandy Neck the other night, and it was one of those perfect Cape Cod evenings (which we didn't see enough of this year, sadly). Max was great, Killian was great, the tide was perfect, the light was gorgeous, the bugs decided to leave us alone, it was truly fantastic. One of those nights when I realized I must have the best job in the world!!!

get your kicks...

Seems like a million years ago we got our kicks on Route 66! It's a great season so far, insanely busy, which everyone assures me is good!! Trying to keep up with it all makes things like my blog get ignored...

As my posts will be scarce for the next month or so, figured I'd put some of my own pix up...

goodbye Senator

Today is a sad day for the Cape, and for Massachusetts, along with the rest of the country & the world. Senator Ted Kennedy was a great man. He did great things. He used his power and strength for us, to make our lives better. We are grateful.

Thank you, Senator.

I offer my sympathies to his family, and wish them peace.

summer

I've been photographing some really fabulous seniors this week (this summer really), having such fun... I love the fact they all end the session by telling me how much fun it was! For me too... I'm so busy I can't keep up with my own self, which is a great thing all things considered... it's such a special job I have...

I don't twitter, way too much else on my plate, but the other day I went to go check it out (how sad, I've never even done that!!) and I searched 'senior portraits'. Seems there are a huge number of seniors out there tweeting about just such the thing, it makes me remember what an important thing I'm doing, and how cool that these families entrust me with all of their photos of their children to celebrate this milestone in their lives... thanks for that... at yesterday's viewing session, we were talking about prints we'd order of all 3 children (once I've photographed the third child in the Class of '12!)

I'll put some pix on my facebook Studio page next week, go become a fan!!

(On a personal note, I need a glorious day tomorrow afternoon for a very special portrait I'm taking, please send happy thoughts and prayers for wonderful weather my way!!!!)

wait for me!

At the end of a great family portrait session at Mayflower beach the other evening, we took some playful photos with the kids and some boats... what a perfect evening it was...

The portrait was for a 40th anniversary gift, what could be better than getting all of the kids and their kids together on a gorgeous Cape Cod evening for a portrait. Diana (the recipient) said she'd been wanting to do this forever, and now she has a portrait she'll cherish...

While we were there, one of the boys found a sand dollar on the beach (already dead). I told him how jealous I was, always wanted to find one, but I refuse to dig them up while they're still alive, without hesitation, he gave it to me as a gift. How cool is that?

Perseid

Last night was great, after an afternoon of photographing seniors at the garden, followed by a couple of senior portraits at the beach, Adriana & I bundled up under a blanket with a big pillow and watched the meteor shower... It was early, only 10:30pm, but we still saw a number of shooting stars, including one that traveled the entire length of the sky... one of my favorite things to do is stargazing, and add shooting stars and I'm a happy camper... I tucked Adriana into her real bed, and went back out with my camera, unfortunately the bugs and my droopy eyelids got the better of me (tough to see shooting stars with your eyes closed I learned!!!) Being the insomniac I am, I just assumed I'd wake up in the middle of the night and go out for another round of gazing, but no, seems I slept right through until morning - figures! There's two more nights, tonight seems a bust, but maybe the clouds will dissipate before the wee hours...

So no Perseids made their way on to my digital files, but the sky was gorgeous, and the time with my daughter really special...

Strokes of Genius

Don't miss Strokes of Genius mini-golf on Main Street, Hyannis, it's only open for 1 more week...

What a great idea, and such fun! We went last weekend and had a blast... we got to choose our favorite holes, between the 4 of us, we had 3 different faves... Different artists/sponsors designed each hole, there's everything from the giant sea monster to the beaches of the Cape to the Hyannis Mets. There were even some members of the Hyannis Mets baseball team there helping out & a rogue pirate (who doesn't love a rogue pirate?) It is definitely not to be missed while your visiting (or living) on Cape Cod.

Go after your family portrait session on the beach, or before you have your senior portrait created, the course is open from 11am to 9pm, but only until August 9th. All monies raised go to the Barnstable Education Foundation, you'll get way more than your $5. worth.

With Thanks

Today Marine Corporal Nicholas Xiarhos of Yarmouth will be buried, and I want to send my condolences and thanks to his family. I didn't know Nicholas, but his father protects the town I live in, and his mother has substituted for my daughter at her school. They are a family that is all about community, so it was so lovely to see the community support them. Both Wednesday, when Nicholas' body returned home from Afghanistan, and today, when they had his funeral, the streets were lined with people who cared, my daughter & I (on Wednesday), and just me today, included.

It was a powerful experience to see both hundreds of people, lines of motorcycles from across the Cape and the state, and cars full of marines honoring this young man who died protecting us. Thank you, Nicholas.

My thoughts and prayers are with his family.

senior portraits

Kathy is this beautiful Barnstable High School senior I photographed the other evening at the beach for her yearbook photo. We had such a great time, the night was perfect, the light gorgeous, all the best conditions for a beautiful beach portrait... She was such fun to photograph because she was enjoying the whole experience. That makes my job so easy!!! I think photographing seniors is one of my favorite parts of being a photographer, they're such a great age, and just a ton of fun...

just for fun

I had an appointment have to reschedule the other evening, so between photographing the West Beach club's annual group photo in Hyannisport and my truly beautiful Barnstable senior I photographed later that evening on Dowses beach (*her photos soon!) I decided to take some quick beach portraits of my lovely daughter...

I can't believe how quickly she's growing up, nearly nine, sometimes she acts like nearly 13, but other times she's all little girl... she's just the best!

Lisa & Andrew

Lisa & Andrew are getting married tomorrow in Rhode Island, I can't wait... the day will be filled with sunshine, laughter, carousel rides, a beautiful bride, a handsome groom, happy families, rose gardens, and love... how I am looking forward to sharing this day with them and their families...

It is my last wedding, at least for now, I have made the difficult decision to pursue other areas in my career, family portraits, maternity, babies and children and high school seniors will be what I devote my time to for this time in my career, so Lisa and Andrew's day will be made even more special to me... I wish them a lifetime of love...

Thanks to all my great clients for your patience with me while I was on r&r getting ready for what's sure to be a fantastic season!

Mexico

As I'll be away for a bit, thought it was time to finally post some images from my Mexico trip... I spent a delightful week over the winter at a circle dance camp with my mum - lot's of dancing, staying in this wonderful monestary where the food was both grown, and served by the monks... I don't think most dancers come home with almost a thousand images, but I am certainly, not like most people!!!!

Please check out the show here!

You'll find images from: Mexico City, Circle Dance Camp & el Monasterio, Xolchicalco, Tepotzlan & Tepotzteco Pyramid, Cuernavaca (& the Robert Brady museum & el Palacio del Cortez), and Coyoacan (including Frida's blue house) where I ended my journey...

Enjoy!

Happy Father's Day!

Happy Father's day to all of you dads - I wish for you a lovely day...

This week I got a small package in the mail from my half sister, Jo, in England. Her mom has sold the house she & my dad lived in, she's bought something smaller now she's alone. (My dad died in '92). In going through the things in the loft (an attic here in the States) they found some photos and cards and things he'd kept and mailed a few on to me.

This photo is so precious to me, don't remember ever seeing it before, and although I'm chatting away and am not at my best, it is one of my favorite photos ever! I realized that I can only think of 3 photos that are just my dad and I together with noone else, I hope there are more than that, but in the images in my brain I can't come up with any others. He was never one for having his photo taken, and being young, I guess it wasn't something I would have thought of. Of course, living on different sides of the pond didn't make it easy either... But it's more than that...

We're at (what I think is) Chysauster in Cornwall, it's summer - you can tell by the clothing!!! (a Cornish summer joke, 'come on kids, grab your sweaters, we're going to the beach!'), and he has his camera over his shoulder (he was my first teacher in my craft). Hmm, wonder where I get this love of stones, or this love of photography... So thanks, Dad, for sharing some of your passions with me and instilling a love for both in my young soul. I miss you. x

To my darling husband, I love you, Adriana & I wish you a very happy day...

HAPPY FATHER'S DAY!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

ladybird, ladybird...

I adore what I do...

Taking photographs of kids, whether at the beach, or on location, or here at my studio, is just such fun... I love it when kids are just themselves... they're really funny when we let them be!!!

(this shot is from a ballet school I photograph - what a cute lady bug!!)

Hyannis is starting to come alive - the sun is shining, the streets are full of happy faces, it must be near to summer!

The Arts Foundation and Citizen's Bank bring you free concerts on Tuesday nights at Aselton Park (Ocean Street) in Hyannis from 6-7:30 pm. Bring your beach chair or blanket and listen to a different band every Tuesday from June 30th through August 18th. Check out the Arts Foundation's website for more info. and listings (and the days and schedule for other towns across the Cape).

no fear of heights here!

There are many things I love about my daughter... The fact that she makes me laugh is definitely one of them. So I come home from the studio, and I find her on top of her swingset - reading a book and listening to her portable radio. Seems reception is better when you're up high!

a sneak peek of Ray's fabulous garden in the background, more on that I'm sure!

(fabulous photo taken with my phone - it was in my purse when I found her!)

a special beach portrait

I had the great joy of photographing Elle and Kenny at the beach in Hyannis the other evening, to celebrate the magical time of being pregnant. They are delightful, and we laughed a lot despite the chilly, May evening... Elle is truly beautiful, she has such a peacefulness to her, how lovely for her baby...

Maternity portraits on the beach are such a wonderful way of celebrating a time which is so special between couples... those months when you're expecting your first child, what an amazing time it is... all those changes just around the corner, fabulous changes mind you!

I wish Elle and Kenny and the little babe on the way a life filled with love, a home filled with laughter, and only the best things as they become a family.

snips & snails

I love gallery wraps, especially the smaller sizes like the 8x10's... they're just such fun... I had great fun with this one, between the metallic finish & writing 'snips & snails & puppy dog tails' down one side...

When Adriana was little I found a double-volume, hard cover, coffee table size, boxed set of nursery rhymes for $3.95. I, of course, grabbed it, it was lovely to have, and brought us many hours of enjoyment... my favorite part is why it was $3.95 to begin with (of course we had to find out for ourselves), someone had (I'm sure as a joke or dare or who knows what) changed the rhyme about what little girls and little boys are made of... so our version says Little Girls are made of snips & snails & puppy dogs tails, and Little Boys are made of sugar & spice & everything nice!!!

Ray's always tried to assure me that it is, indeed, the correct poem!!!!

lollipop

So I got this email first thing this morning from my friend Dave, the reference was 'lollipop'. His wife, my dear, dear friend Mouse, had a baby this morning. A wee little lass, that's all I know... I wonder if she looked liked a lollipop? Or maybe Dave was having a lollipop when she made her grand arrival... or maybe he was having one while he sent the emails announcing the great news... I wonder...

I love this little girl, and welcome her with oodles of love and best wishes and I can't wait to meet her... She's across the pond, so I don't know when it'll be that I get to, maybe she'll be sitting up and smiling and giggling or maybe she'll have started to crawl, I hope she hasn't started walking by the time I make her acquaintance, as that would just be too long... all I know is that she is loved by people on both sides of that huge expanse of water that sometimes causes me such pain...

Mouse & Dave, and wee lollipop (aka Fluff) we are so happy for you all, congratulations. Welcome to this fabulous journey of parenthood! We love you all x

10 years ago today I married this pretty cool guy... I can't believe how the time has flown, and the great things that have happened over the last 10 years... Adriana being the best of those things (of course!) but there have been a lot of happy times, with hopefully many more to come...

Anniversaries are good, I got pancakes for breakfast on a weekday!!

I love my hubby! Happy Anniversary, Ray...

love the earth

Today is Earth Day. We need to love our planet - there are so many simple ways, but it needs all of us... Here are easy things you could do today: bring your own bags shopping, change a standard lightbulb for a flourescent one, turn off the water when you're brushing your teeth - doing the dishes - whenever, collect rainwater to water your plants, pick up litter around your neighborhood, turn off your computer when you're not using it, make your own cards - preferably on recycled paper, wrap your presents in material, or reuse the gift bags your presents come in, worry more about a green earth than a green lawn, use both sides of a piece of paper, recycle all of your plastics/glass/aluminum/paper/magazines/catalogs, pick up after your dog, unplug your chargers when they're not in use, use rechargeable batteries in everything, eat locally grown food, eat organically grown, local food, shop local too, reuse packaging material, write letters to your leaders on behalf of the environment, teach someone else to love the earth, do all of your errands at one time to save gas, or better yet - walk or ride your bike, compost all of your organic matter, hang your laundry out to dry instead of using the dryer, use the backs of all of those masses amounts of paper we get everyday from school/junk mail/ etc. for scrap paper, buy recycled whenever possible, use teatowels/cloth napkins instead of paper towels/napkins...

and that's without even thinking about it - imagine the difference we could make if everyone just cares...

remember Earth Day is everyday....

Sophie

Sophie is so delightful! She's truly a bundle of joy, she started smiling at me the moment she came through the door, and was such fun to photograph. Her beautiful blue eyes so expressive, playing with her tiny toes, her cheeky smile while she was trying to chew on my background! It was a great way to spend the morning!!!

I first photographed Sophie's mom, Emily, for her high school senior portraits... I then photographed Emily's mom's second wedding - a lovely affair at the Cape Museum of Fine Arts... and now I'm photographing Emily's beautiful baby and her family, how cool... Being a part of families as they grow, and getting to be a part of all of the important moments, it just really doesn't get better...

Who knows if I'll photograph Sophie's senior portraits, class of '27 (or thereabouts), hmmmm.... we'll see... I hope to see her smiling face a lot between now and then, we'll just stay in the now!!

Happy Easter!

I wish you all a very happy Easter... happy spring... happy return of the Ospreys...

As always, take time to enjoy your families, connect with those you love, play a game, dye Easter eggs, blow bubbles, celebrate being together...

an image of Mexico

one of these days I'm hoping to have time to explore my images from Mexico... I took hundreds, but have scarcely had a chance to even look at them as my life is slightly overbooked these days!!!

But I love this image... it's the end of the day in Tepotzlan, the market is closed, the cobblestones have been swept clean, tarps are covering the stalls, it is quiet and calm, and the rose seller is heading home... It brings back Mexico for me. I love the peace of this image. I love how proud and strong the woman is. I love the pride within her, within all of the people there. I love the colours. I love the mountains in the distance. (I love the fact I climbed those mountains to get to Tepozteco Pyramid) This image has a story to tell, to share.

I can't wait to play with this one, to create an altered image that shares a part of my story as well as a part of hers... I'll share my altered creation someday...

more Earth Hour

Go check out some fab images people took during Earth Hour this year... I love seeing that there are so many people who truly care for this Earth of ours...

earth hour

Saturday is the day for Earth Hour. From 8:30 to 9:30 pm, turn your lights off to save the earth. It's easy, it's fun, it's so simple...

Last year we played games by candlelight for that hour, and then decided to spend the rest of the evening in darkness, Adriana asked if we could have earth hour every week, unfortunately, we didn't follow through with that, but maybe this year!

So join me, my studio, the Empire State building, Broadway, the state of Arkansas, and thousands of others and take a tiny step that will make a difference...

Visit their website for tips, info., games for the kids, and to sign-up and then turn out those lights!!!

(earth tip for today, did you know that chargers plugged into the wall are using electricity whether or not they're charging anything?)

welcome Lydia!

Lydia was in a hurry to arrive, she came weeks earlier than was planned, but what a gift she is!
Tara was so amazingly beautiful when she was pregnant, all moms to be definitely have that glow, but she was truly radiant... Happy, confident, beautiful, imagine all the gifts that were being given to Lydia before she made her rather grand entrance!
Lydia was so sweet at her first portrait session, 3 weeks, and so expressive with her hands, she made us laugh as she used her hands to do the talking she's got to wait a while to do! Babies really are so unique, immediately... how very cool it all is...
I love the way that as a photographer, I get to share in all of these fantastic parts of life, pregnancy, babies, next time I see Tara & Lydia it will be at the beach this summer when I'll get to meet dad too... I already can't wait for the session!!

(Happy Birthday to my beautiful sister, Marla. I love you xxx)

celebrate love

I think it's great there's a holiday to celebrate love... Have a fabulous Valentine's Day, tell those you care about how much you love them... Ray, I can't imagine my life without you, you are my hero... I adore you, and our life together... Adriana, you are my favorite person ever in the history of the world, in the words of my darling Cappers, you are the dog's dinner (yes, it turns out that is a good thing!)

Celebrate love this weekend... Celebrate your family...

Happy Valentine's Day...

Keira

a new baby, what a great way to start the year! Keira is so beautiful, she had this great, teeny tiny, smile, and was so expressive! It was as if she was telling a story in every photo, and every tale was so worth listening to...

What a beauty! So lovely to meet you, sweet Keira...
